While we got a lull here in the global astroglee (not to discount any personal glee you might have going on), let's look in more detail at the biggest shift going on in 2003-06 - well, other than our heiros gamos I mean.   That biggest shift would be the opposition of Saturn to Chiron...

Chiron has a very irregular orbit, dipping inside the orbit of Saturn, then going out almost to the orbit of Uranus.   We could even think of Saturn as the veil, since one of its primary functions is to help us forget who we really are, and get us to believe that we actually are the bag of flesh and emotion that most of spend most of our time being.   Those of us who aren't silly enough to think we're our thoughts, anyway.   So when ya think about it, it's fairly amazing to have Chiron actually coming inside the veil!

So who is this Chironic intruder, anyway?   He is the Healer, the path to Wholeness, to integrity.   Story has it that he's a wounded healer, galloping around with an unhealable wound - but that's merely an urban legend.   All he's doing is demonstrating to us that our victims all believe themselves to be unhealable, else they'd hardly be victims.   And since it's empathy that heals, he's just demonstrating how to do empathy for the unhealable, which is healing.   Clear as mud from the healing springs, eh?   It aint half the mystery that it sounds like it is.

This is pretty remarkable - you can bet that one of King Lizard's first tricks when he gets his asteroid-blaster working, will be to zap Chiron into another dimension.   Every 50 years (the length of his orbit), Chiron spends 5 to 8 years subverting all those herculean efforts by the dominant paradigm to sell us fear and consumerism and health care.

The last time this happened was 1992-99.   That was an interesting time period - its most salient characteristic being the end of the economics of scarcity, and the beginning of an economics of abundance.   Sure, this "bubble" has been discredited by those who exploit fear and scarcity - and those who didn't sell soon enough.   But it'll be back after 2020, once we work through some demographic excesses and kiss g'bye to the industrial revolution.

If yer into history, previous Chiron penetrations were in 1943-48, 1891-99, 1841-49, 1794-1800, and 1745-1753, with thanks to Juan Antonio Revilla - http://www.expreso.co.cr/centaurs/ - for his vast research on these subjects, and his generosity in making it available to us.

The 1992-99 Chiron penetration was particularly profound because Pluto was also penetrating the orbit of Neptune at the same time.   While Neptune symbolizes our relations with the Collective and the Godhead, Pluto represents the Infinite.   Dont matter how far out ya think ya are, Pluto can still flip ya like a pancake and turn yer world upside down.   So not only was our inner healer stronger than our inner controller (Saturn), but our inner transformer (Pluto) was stronger than the fog that usually hides the Grand Prize (Neptune).

Pluto's penetration of Neptune's orbit ran from 1979 to 1999 - amazingly close to the span of the longest bull market in history, with Chiron's embrace of Saturn marking the booster phase.   Not only that, but Chiron and Pluto conjoined a few hours before the turn of the century, at 12 Sadge - "The spiritualization and promotion of great symbols of a New Age by minds sensitive to its precursory manifestations" [Rudhyar p.216].

That's pretty heady stuff, the Healer and the Transformer initiating a new 70-year cycle with such fanfare just as the century turned over.   And it was trine to the 1/1/2000 Grand Cross as well, implying that Chiron-Pluto is the path out of consternation in this decade and century.   This is very optimistic stuff, kids.   The next Chiron-Pluto conjunction, by the way, is in April 2069 at 3 Aries, "The sustaining power of the Whole, as the individual identifies herself with Its life" [p.51], with Saturn opposite.

For comparison, the previous Chiron-Pluto cycle was initiated in April 1919 at 5 Cancer - "The tragic results which are likely to occur when the individual's will pits itself carelessly against the power of the collective will" [p.113].   Can't imagine that this had anything to do with the 20th century.   Do I need to point out that the collective will is not the same as the cultural norms, or is that obvious to everybody?

Pluto has a 250-year orbit, so the last time these two met while both were inside their respective gatekeepers, was 1745, at 20 Scorpio, "The revelation to the human consciousness of what lies beyond dualistic knowledge" [p. 203] - in that case perhaps the duality between royal birth and "common" birth.

Okay, so we see this Healer-dude has some credibility, and that his recent penetration of Saturn promised some serious consequences.   So let's look at this Saturn-Chiron cycle, the primary source for our spiritual downloads.   The cycle spans about 65 years, and the current one began in April 1966, at 24 Pisces - "On a small island surrounded by the vast expanse of the sea, people are seen living in close interaction" [p.284].

1966 - doesn't that sound like a familiar year?   This Saturn-Chiron conjunction was opposite the infamous Uranus-Pluto conjunction!   It's the sprouting of this Uranus-Pluto cycle that's the main effect of 2012.   The first Uranus-Pluto was at 18 Virgo - "The ability to contact deeper resources of the unconscious psyche and sensitiveness to psychic intimations and omens" [p.162], but the next two were at 17 Virgo, "The explosive energy of long-repressed contents of the subconscious" [p.161].

In other words, we gotta use that ability to contact deeper resources sensitively before they contact us.   That "violent silt at the bottom of the river of the so-called resumption of normal everyday life" as Prechtel put it.   Now, 2012-15 is when this Uranus-Pluto energy becomes permanent and above-ground, so it's more than just another traffic light.   Note that the main theme is the sensitiveness, the explosive theme is the undercurrent.   Fitting for the End of Karma, eh?

The simultaneous initiations of the Uranus-Pluto cycle and the Saturn-Chiron cycle link them together, and the shorter cycle (Saturn-Chiron) inevitably serves the longer.   The opposition between them implies that Saturn-Chiron serves to make us aware of Uranus-Pluto.   So these island dudes become our canaries - will the "long-repressed contents" drown the island before the sensitiveness reverses the rise in sea level?   Or will the presence of the canary trigger our sensitiveness in time to avert inundation by the "long-repressed contents"?   The astrological answers are respectively No and Yes, since its 18 Virgo (the sensitiveness) that's the primary theme.   Not that it won't be touch and go for a while, as the secondary theme (the "long-repressed contents") acts out.

So, what more do we know about this Saturn-Chiron canary?   Well, when Chiron comes inside Saturn, it crosses the zodiac faster than Saturn does.   And when Chiron does this while making a major aspect (ie, an astrologically important angle) to Saturn, the aspect can remain in effect for 20 years!   That is astrologically remarkable, and clearly a "lesson" that the Universe is intent on teaching!   In this case, Saturn opposes Chiron for 20 years - which is to say, the peak of the canary's struggle to keep it's feathers dry, lasts from 1986-2006!   Will someone tell the canary that karma's canceled.

We'll chronicle that soon, but first let's peek at what comes next.   The Uranus-Pluto cycle is about as long as two Saturn-Chiron cycles, so the next Saturn-Chiron cycle will tell us more about where we're headed.   It begins in June 2028, at 7 Taurus.   Rudhyar's reading for 7 Taurus [pp.74-5] is fascinating...

"...a most important part, but usually narrowly interpreted (or interpreted away!) episode of the Christ mythos.   Early in his ministry, Jesus meets a Samarian woman at an ancestral well.   This woman belongs to a tribe despised by the Jews; moreover, she is unmarried and therefore on the fringe of her own society.   It is to just that kind of woman that Jesus reveals that he is the Messiah...

"What does this mean?   Jesus, as the Avatar incorporating the Christ-Impulse, came to replace the old tribal order with a new order based on universal Love...   The highest meets the lowest when this lowest is free from traditional bonds and open to love.   The creative future descends first to that which has become chaos.   An old order is never open to a new Revolution until it has accepted disorder in the name of that Power which subsumes all forms of order, ie, Love."

Bear in mind that this is an Age-o-Pisces story - how do we convert it to an Age-o-Aqua story?   At the time of Jesus, everybody had already had 2000 years to understand what the Age-o-Aries was all about, the edge between possession (cardinal fire - possession by spirit I mean, not possession of things) and aggression (Mars).   The superhero myths (possession, the zone) and the "if it dont killya it'll makeya stronger" story were both very relevant to the age of Aries.   The Age of Pisces was about the edge between hysteria (mutable water) and compassion (Neptune).

So that earlier transition was about moving from Stoic detachment to Dionysian involvement.   The Age-o-Aqua is the edge between idealism (fixed air) and integrity (Uranus).   Finding and finessing the places where intellectual consistency conflicts with our natural (not programmed) sense of what must be acted out.   Lotsa folks today think the Age-o-Aqua means that the resta the world finally comes around to adopting their Piscean codependence - but it aint so.

Do we need a refresher course on codependence?   Probably.   It means we agree to protect one another from our "negative" feelings.   We agree to support one another's efforts to limit our reality to that which is comfortable.   Any given astrological sign is usually contrary to its neighbors, and Aqua is no exception.   Both Aquarius and Uranus are much more in-your-face than they are codependent.

Chiron is the healer because he shows the way from Saturn (the limited ego) to Uranus (integrity with our individual higher self).   So its kinda ironic that Saturn-Chiron (1986-2006) and Uranus-Pluto (2012-2015) are the twin heralds of this shift of Ages.   A social strategy of codependence complementing a personal strategy of denial, both supported by "positive thinking," keeps dis-ease out of our attention, but not out of our field.   "Get thee behind me" works to keep our forward vision clear, but it leaves kindofa mess in the back yard.

The Chironic strategy is to empathize with what we would earlier have denied.   To love it into being worthy of taking its place in the front yard next to the plastic flamingos, while not identifying with it.   That's what the Age o'Aquarius is about, finding the positive in our warts not by hiding them or denying their unglamor, but by loving them as if they were part of our Whole Self.
