In Tehanu, Ursula Leguin tells us [pp.63-64],

" 'What's wrong with men?' Tenar inquired cautiously.

"As cautiously, lowering her voice, Moss replied, 'I dont know, my dearie.   I've thought on it.   Often I've thought on it.   The best I can say it is like this.   A man's in his skin, see, like a nut in its shell.'   She held up her long, bent, wet fingers as if holding a walnut.   'It's hard and strong, that shell, and it's all full of him.   Full of grand man-meat, manself.   And that's all.   That's all there is.   It's all him and nothing else, inside.'

"Tenar pondered awhile and finally asked, 'But if he's a wizard--'

" 'Then it's all his power, inside.   His power's himself, see.   That's how it is with him.   And that's all.   When his power goes, he's gone.   Empty.'   She cracked the unseen walnut and tossed the shells away.   'Nothing.'

" 'And a woman, then?'

" 'Oh, well, dearie, a woman's a different thing entirely.   Who knows where a woman begins and ends?   Listen, mistress, I have roots, I have roots deeper than this island.   Deeper than the sea, older than the raising of the lands.   I go back into the dark.'   Moss's eyes shone with a weird brightness in their red rims and her voice sang like an instrument.   'I go back into the dark!   Before the moon I was.   No one knows, no one knows, no one can say what I am, what a woman is, a woman of power, a woman's power, deeper than the roots of islands, older than the Making, older than the moon.   Who dares ask questions of the dark?   Who'll ask the dark its name?' "

So that's our challenge this year, aided and abetted in large degree by this Venus Transit with the Old Mage Uranus standing.   For the yang, "Who'll ask the dark its name?"   And for the yin, How do you respect "Nothing"?   It's not all cut and dried, you cant just check between yer gams to see where yer work lies, it could go either way.   Some folks may even notice that there's only one question there, just painted on the mirror in different colors.

Venus cycles trace a five-pointed star on the sky (http://www.lunarplanner.com/HCpages/Venus.html), and no one can ignore the two Grand Quintiles that precede December's long-cycle Venus-Mars initiation (http://www.grandquintiles.co.uk/), so lets look at the quintiles in the Venus-Transit chart.   In some ways this chart foretells the next 113 years.

The easiest quintile to interpret is Pallas-Jupiter.   It's waning.   This suggests we will protect what must be defended, but we will learn to defend with a light heart, without resisting change.   Dont get even, get odd as they say.   We serve the transformation, not the outcome.   Next is Rahu, the Dragon's Head, quintile to both Mars and the Moon, signifying Balance between "Nothing" and "the dark."   Quintiles are not battles to be won or tasks to be done, they signify what we enjoy learning and practicing.   In this case, standing up and speaking out to defend what we hold sacred, but with a light heart and balance between doing and being, between persistence and variation.   It's a powerful strategy, never parrying the same way twice, but never letting up on the pressure.

Most important are the quintiles to the Venus Transit itself - from the Dragon's Tail Ketu, and from a Juno-Chiron conjunction.   This conjunction is a near-miss, as the new Juno-Chiron cycle doesnt initiate till November (http://www.jbuss.com/jbl3/relationship203.htm) just before Venus-Mars does.   The new Juno-Chiron cycle is about dedication to "accepting defeat gracefully," meaning we'll be constantly releasing expectations for the next 35 years as we shift the foundations of our worldview from scarcity and competition to creativity and community.   But this near-miss is a final vestige of the previous cycle, which began in January 1999 at 2 Sadge.   This degree is about the power of mind to stir up drama.   The gift here, and it's a big one, is that the Venus Transit is a getoutajailfree card for our victim drama patterns.   For those who choose to use it.
